Background of the Study

Cybersecurity threats have become a growing concern for academic institutions, with universities increasingly targeted by hackers seeking to exploit vulnerabilities. Ethical hacking, also known as penetration testing, involves using hacking techniques to identify and fix security weaknesses before malicious actors can exploit them (Ibrahim et al., 2023). Ethical hackers simulate cyberattacks to assess the security posture of a network, helping institutions strengthen their defenses.

Federal University, Wukari, operates a large and complex network infrastructure, making it susceptible to cyber threats such as unauthorized access, malware, and denial-of-service attacks. By integrating ethical hacking into its cybersecurity strategy, the university can proactively identify vulnerabilities and improve network security resilience (Okonkwo & Musa, 2024).

Statement of the Problem

Despite the increasing cyber threats faced by Federal University, Wukari, the institution lacks a structured approach to vulnerability assessment and penetration testing. Traditional security methods, such as firewalls and antivirus software, are reactive and often ineffective against sophisticated attacks. Ethical hacking provides a proactive solution but is underutilized in university security strategies. This study explores how ethical hacking can be leveraged to strengthen the university’s network security framework.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the current cybersecurity threats faced by Federal University, Wukari.

  2. To examine the role of ethical hacking in identifying and mitigating security vulnerabilities.

  3. To propose strategies for integrating ethical hacking into the university’s cybersecurity framework.

Research Questions

  1. What are the major cybersecurity threats affecting Federal University, Wukari?

  2. How can ethical hacking contribute to strengthening network security at the university?

  3. What strategies can be implemented to incorporate ethical hacking into the university’s security protocols?

Significance of the Study

This study will highlight the importance of ethical hacking in academic cybersecurity, providing actionable recommendations for Federal University, Wukari, to enhance its security measures.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is limited to the role of ethical hacking in network security at Federal University, Wukari, Taraba State. It does not explore other cybersecurity disciplines such as digital forensics and malware analysis.

Definitions of Terms

  • Ethical Hacking: The practice of legally testing and securing computer systems against cyber threats.

  • Penetration Testing: A simulated cyberattack to assess security weaknesses.

  • Cybersecurity Resilience: The ability of a system to anticipate, withstand, and recover from cyber threats.
